Rebuilding A Dana 44 & Converting it to 8 Lug
So now that I have swapped the old 12 bolt for a 14 bolt full floater in the rear, it's time to start the next step. The front end will need to be converted to 8-lug so the rims will match. That's a lot easier than carrying two spare tires. Since I knew this day was coming for some time, I have secretly (ok, not so secretly) been buying and stashing away parts. A couple years back I got a pretty good deal on some dana 44's. By the time the horse trading was done i ended up with a bed full of parts. My plan is to be able to rebuild a complete axle in the shop, so I can keep the OEM axle under the truck until it is time to swap. This plan has two main reasons. The first is obvious, with an axle under the truck it can still be moved around. The other answer is the fact that a complete running axle is worth more and easier to sell.
